Millions of North Americans suffer through sleepless nights, and some of the blame can be laid squarely on our lifestyles. In most cases we're forced to lead hectic, busy lives, which in turn leads to stress and lack of sleep. Our dependence on quick food eaten on the go can also contribute to our sleeplessness, and once a routine of sleepless nights sets in, it's a hard habit to break. Once you've been forced to go a while without the proper amount of sleep, you're in line for sleep deprivation, which can earnestly hamper your work performance and endanger your very life.

It's hard to believe that a lack of sleep can endanger your very life, but it's true. Lack of sleep can lead to weight gain, which can in turn lead to a battery of other health issues, like high blood pressure, stroke or even a heart attack. Falling asleep behind the wheel of a automobile that's traveling at 50 mph can put your life in serious danger, not to mention other motorists and pedestrians. How about working in a factory, around machinery that can cause serious harm? You guessed it; your life could be in jeopardy if you're deprived of sleep.

Of course there are all of the other non-life threatening illnesses or symptoms that can be caused by sleep deprivation, like the impossibility to reason properly and handle your emotions. If you're unable to handle your emotions, you're irritable and have a hard time making quick decisions, how long before you make a slip-up? It's only a matter of time until your social life or professional life is affected, right?

Getting the proper amount of sleep is very essential, which is why help is available for those who couldn't sleep a wink last night…or the night before…or the night before. There are natural sleeping aids on the market, like melatonin. You could also try other methods, like taking a relaxing bath before bed and letting the worries of the day wash off, along with the dirt. Reading before bed or listening to calming music is 2 other ways you could handle your sleeplessness. Everyone is different, and it's up to you to find what works.

However, if your sleeplessness persists, you could also make a rapid journey to your family doctors. He or she may be able to prescribe something that will help you sleep. Most people go to the doctors as a last resort, but it's essential that you don't wait to long or take the risk of making that journey only after something has gone horribly wrong.

If your motto is 'I couldn't sleep a wink last night,' it's possibly time to take action. If the complication persists, see your doctor first to see if something is physically wrong, then get online and use some of the valuable tips you can find to conquer your insomnia!
