You may have heard of photo rejuvenation, it has been discussed on TV and radio talk shows, in magazines, newspapers and sertainly on the Internet. Maybe you know it involves the use of some kind of appliance that shines light on the skin. You may even know the names of some of the photo rejuvenation devices that are on the market. So, if you are among those that have heard of photo rejuvenation or photo facial therapy have you asked yourself “What does that light do anyway?” or “How can light help my skin?” For that matter what does photorejuvenation mean? Those are valuable questions.

Let’s start with the simple question. What does photo rejuvenation mean? Well photo means light and rejuvenate means to make young again. So, photo rejuvenation…using light to make young again.

Now the tougher question, how can light help my skin and how can light be a skin care treatment? I like using analogies to clarify things so we’ll use one here. When you were in school do you remember learning about how sunlight causes photosynthesis in plants? If you missed that day what your teacher told your class was that certain light rays from the sun caused the plant to make new cells and structures causing it to grow. The sunlight was stimulating the cells. You have possibly figured out that photosynthesis means using light to make something. OK, that’s for plants, but your asking how does that use to me? Photorejuvenation device companies have chosen only the kinds of light that can have a alike invigorating effect on our cells. In fact the light from photo rejuvenation devices targets small small organs in the cells called mitochondria (they are our cells power generators) and gets them charged up causing the cells to get busy making more of what they generally make. So if it’s a cell that makes collagen or elastin you get more collagen and elastin with the result being younger more vibrant looking skin. Therefore, light as a natural skin care treatment!
